The platysma is a superficial muscle of the neck embedded within the superficial cervical fascia. It extends from the lower jaw, covering the anterior neck, and inserts into the clavicle and upper thoracic region. The platysma functions to tense the skin of the neck, depress the mandible, and assist in facial expressions like frowning or grimacing. Despite being thin, it is important in surgical approaches to the neck and in procedures such as flap reconstructions. Its superficial location also makes it vulnerable to injury, which can affect both aesthetics and function of the lower face and neck.
