What is transsphenoidal surgery? Transsphenoidal surgery is the most common procedure for removing a tumor of the pituitary gland. Rather than opening up the skull in a traditional craniotomy, the neurosurgeon reaches the tumor through the nasal passages and the sphenoid sinus.

The transsphenoidal procedure is usually well tolerated by the elderly and by those with medical conditions such as cardiac or pulmonary disease or diabetes, as long as their functional and endocrine status has been evaluated by appropriate preoperative studies (53).

The learning curve seems to be relatively shallow, because a statistically significantly decreased incidence of morbidity and death could be documented after 200 and even 500 transsphenoidal operations.
