Anatomy of a neuron. Neurons, like other cells, have a cell body (called the soma ). The nucleus of the neuron is found in the soma. Neurons need to produce a lot of proteins, and most neuronal proteins are synthesized in the soma as well. Various processes (appendages or protrusions) extend from the cell body.
Neuron Classification. These neurons have a single axon and many dendrites extending from the cell body. Unipolar neurons have one very short process that extends from a single cell body and branches into two processes. Unipolar neurons are found in spinal nerve cell bodies and cranial nerves.
Neuron Structure A neuron varies in shape and size depending upon their function and location. All neurons have three different parts – dendrites, cell body and axon.
