In humans, it is located in the abdomen behind the stomach . The pancreas is a gland, having both an endocrine and a digestive exocrine function. As an endocrine gland, it functions mostly to regulate blood sugar levels, secreting the hormones insulin, glucagon, somatostatin, and pancreatic polypeptide.

The pancreas contains endocrine cells that are gathered in clusters popularly known as the Pancreatic Islets or Islets of Langerhans. These cells help in the secretion of primary pancreas gland hormones such as the vasoactive intestinal peptide, glucagon, Gastrin, Somatostatin, and the insulin hormones.
