Diastolic blood pressure is the second number on a blood pressure reading. Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of the arteries. Diastolic blood pressure is the measure of this force as the heart rests between beats.

It’s measurement is recorded by two numbers. The first (systolic pressure) is measured after the heart contracts and is highest. The second (diastolic pressure) is measured before the heart contracts and lowest. A blood pressure cuff is used to measure the pressure.

Diastolic hypotension (when the diastolic blood pressure is low) may be seen with dehydration 4 or with bleeding episodes, or if the arteries become abnormally dilated. Blood pressure is a very dynamic thing. The level of your blood pressure depends on the activity of your heart and the elasticity of your arteries.
