The meninges of the brain are three protective layers: dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater. The dura is tough and fibrous, providing mechanical protection and forming dural venous sinuses. The arachnoid mater is a delicate, web-like membrane, under which lies the cerebrospinal fluid-filled subarachnoid space. The pia mater closely adheres to the brain surface, following sulci and gyri. Together, these layers cushion the brain, facilitate nutrient and waste exchange, and maintain structural integrity. Meningeal inflammation, as in meningitis, can severely compromise brain function.
