The vagus nerve is the tenth cranial nerve and has a wide distribution. It exits the skull through the jugular foramen and descends within the carotid sheath. In the thorax, it gives branches to the heart and lungs before contributing to the esophageal plexus. In the abdomen, it supplies parasympathetic fibers to much of the gastrointestinal tract. Because of its extensive course, it influences heart rate, digestion, and vocal cord function.
