The parietal pleura consists of four continuous regionscostal, diaphragmatic, mediastinal, and cervical pleuraeach lining a different part of the thoracic cavity. The costal pleura covers the inner surfaces of the ribs and intercostal spaces, while the diaphragmatic pleura reflects over the superior surface of the diaphragm. The mediastinal pleura lines the lateral aspects of the mediastinum, surrounding major structures such as the heart and great vessels. The cervical, or cupula, pleura extends slightly above the first rib into the root of the neck. These regions form a smooth, lubricated surface that allows the lungs to expand and contract with minimal friction during breathing.
