Anatomical Course of the Musculocutaneous Nerve

The musculocutaneous nerve arises from the lateral cord of the brachial plexus and contains fibers from spinal roots C5 to C7. It enters the arm by piercing the coracobrachialis muscle, which serves as an important anatomical landmark, and then travels between the biceps brachii and brachialis muscles while supplying motor branches to both. As it descends, it contributes to elbow flexion and supination through these muscles, and eventually emerges lateral to the biceps tendon. Distally, it continues as the lateral cutaneous nerve of the forearm, providing sensory innervation to the lateral forearm. Its relatively superficial path makes it vulnerable to injury but also useful in surgical nerve grafting and regional anesthesia.
