The menisci of the knee are crescent-shaped fibrocartilaginous structures that deepen the tibial articular surfaces. The medial meniscus is C-shaped and more firmly attached, making it more prone to injury. The lateral meniscus is more circular and relatively mobile. They distribute weight, absorb shock, and improve joint stability. Superiorly, they articulate with the femoral condyles, enhancing congruency of the joint surfaces. Tears often occur with twisting injuries and can compromise knee function, leading to pain, swelling, and mechanical locking.
