The pubis, ischium, and ilium together constitute the pelvis while the thigh bone is the femur. The bones together make up the hip. The hip itself is a ball and socket joint, much like the shoulder. The structures necessary to create this joint are the socket, the joint capsule, muscle, ligaments, and the neck/trochanter of the femur.
